Directed by William Friedkin and starring Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, Fernando Rey and Tony Lo Bianco, The French Connection features Hackman and Scheider as two New York City cops out to nab a notorious French drug dealer. Made for $1.8 million, The French Connection premiered simultaneously in New York City and Los Angeles on October 7, 1971, making a huge splash at the box office and earning eight Academy Award nominations: Best Picture (won), Best Director (Friedkin, won), Best Actor (Hackman, won), Best Screenplay (Ernest Tidyman, won), Best Supporting Actor (Scheider), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing (won) and Best Sound.

A collection of nine 8x10-inch black-and-white and four 8x10-inch color movie stills in very fine- condition sold at auction for $26. In order to get a feel for their roles, Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider accompanied real-life NYPD detectives Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso for a month prior to filming. Hackman was reportedly disgusted in what he had witnessed on the mean streets of New York.
