Roy Campanella's (1921-1993) baseball career was cut short by a horrific automobile crash on January 28, 1958, which left him paralyzed from the chest down. Nicknamed "Campy," Campanella played his entire 1948-1957 big league career with the Brooklyn Dodgers, amassing 1,161 hits, 242 home runs, 856 runs batted in and a lifetime batting average of .276. One of the premier catchers of his day, a veteran of the old Negro Leagues and a two-time National League Most Valuable Player (1951, 1955), Roy Campanella was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.
